"An important and comprehensive exploration of 400 years of Black history in Canada.
This narrative journey through Black history in Canada begins with the arrival in 1604 of Mathieu Da Costa, the first known African in the country, and continues through the Black Lives Matter movement and the ongoing fight for social justice. A one-of-a-kind book, it contains inspiring and thought-provoking stories of the people involved in Canada’s legacy of slavery, the Black Loyalist and Exoduster movements, the Underground Railroad and the fight for civil rights. Separate from the chronological history, the book also examines key issues that have affected the lives of Black Canadians, including slavery, racism and prejudice, and representation.

With informative and engaging text, author Rosemary Sadlier honors the proud history of Black Canadians on every page. Sidebars with interesting facts, quotations and profiles of historical figures appear throughout the book, making this a perfect fit for social studies lessons on Canadian heritage and history. The back matter includes six pages of profiles of important Black figures in the arts, sciences, sports, politics and more, as well as a glossary of key terms and an index. "Stretch out your summer and give yourself the time to write – four days of instruction, inspiration and creativity. Award yourself with time away from distractions, with no dishes to do and wonderful food at every meal, as you sit with your feet up and write in the most beautiful wilderness setting in Ontario. This is where the Group of Seven got its inspiration (Tom Thompson is buried just a couple of lakes over); it’s a wonderful place for you to find your inspiration, too.
The retreat will feature both instruction and guided writing exercises, plus one-on-one critiquing and coaching from Brian. You’ll also have lots of time to relax, rejuvenate, and reconnect with your creativity.
All writing levels welcome. Whether you are just beginning or have a novel in progress, please join us.
This year, the retreat will again be limited to eleven participants. This will mean plenty of one-on-one time with the instructor...."

BIPOC Stay At Home Writing Retreat
A weekend-long Stay At Home Retreat run for and by People of Colour
Hello Firefly community!
"It’s Asifa, Kim and Mary here, three of the coaches at Firefly. We are thrilled to offer a “Stay At Home Retreat” for Black, Indigenous and People of Colour (BIPOC)
to come together, write, connect, exhale, explore, and lovingly witness each other’s words.
Our goal is to create space for and with People of Colour to lean into our writing voices. There will be room to wade into the themes that don’t get a lot of attention in predominantly white circles such as white supremacy, microaggressions, immigration, colourism, racism, colonialism, intersectionality, and the complexity and contours of our identities as we define them. But you can also decide not to dive into these topics and just enjoy writing for the sake of it. We'll spend lots of time just having fun with words.
This will be a weekend of writing in the moment, sharing, and getting full-hearted, supportive feedback from one another. We’ll use guided visualizations, silent writing time, and discussion to invite our creativity to play. We’ll also have plenty of screen breaks and chances to share in small groups.
This is our first time all facilitating together, and we’re excited to work as a team of three around a (virtual) table with people who get it, who don’t question each other’s lived experience and have likely experienced many of the same things.
Beginner and seasoned writers are very welcome!"

Writer's Quote
Tip 17: Be fascinated in order to be fascinating.
"The more interested you are about the subject you’re writing about, the more intrigued your readers will be with what you’ve written."
Here’s a tip: "Faced with less-than-inspiring subject material for an assigned project? Find a fascinating angle for your story. With the right approach, it’s possible to write an interesting story about something unappealing." (From 30 Writing Tips To Make Writing Easier by Karen Hertzberg)
